Place and Time- Do You Know Rio De La Plata by Oladokun Sulaiman
PLACE AND TIME- DO YOU KNOW RIO DE LA PLATA
Once princess Dian was asked if she was going finished college education after her divorce, she replied that, she has traveled, that travel itself education- it is for those who did travel blind and who use the opportunity for living one place at time to learn.. It is only through traveling and seeing places other people’s culture that we can know one another better. From my experience traveling actually reduce the differences between human, it is one thing that is important in a lifetime, as somebody put it , life is like a book , a person who did not travel end up reading only one page .also from experience going places of every time I see a new place , I end up rediscovering myself not only myself but also the beauty of the design of the universe and the mighty of almighty GOD.
On December 23rd 1998, I was contacted to embark on merchant ship a MV SAMDA, a very ship , I flew from the far east To Europe , where I even accidentally meet my former doctor , that’s is how small t he world is , we must be a good person , because we human are just like , we never know where and when we can meet we , meet anywhere . Alright, I continue the journey to Senegal, a country in sub Sahara Africa (we will visit Senegal later), I was glad to see Africa again. The ship refused to sail for one month – what, that is good for me ….I seize the chance to visit riparian countries in West Africa.
The ship finally sailed, huh …. The outing is for (Senegal- Freetown – Ivory Coast (along the coast) – (cross the Atlantic Ocean) to Recife and Salvador in brazil , then sail down the map of the world to Rio de la Plata ,in Argentina coast – enter the biggest estuarine in the world to port of san Lorenzo .
As the say –
“It is not the direction of the wind that matter, it is the set of the sail”
We make sure everything is order the engine , the clearances , the food , we set sailed along the coast of west Africa to Freetown in serial-loan , then Abidjan in ivory coast ( what happen there ask me ). Then we start to cross the Atlantic Ocean, start another period of absolute solitude and glad tiding , plug in into nature again , in fact, it is in the high sea that we get a lot of rest , in the port , it is always busy , so many stuffs to do. Moment in high sea is always a great moment of reflection when you from mobile man made island look east , west , north , south , and u see a nobody , but the blue sky , the sea , and her blueness , her time of calmness and turbulence , the sun the rain , all the planetary body maintaining course- A critical thinker will reflect about how great God is , to even get that boat moving in that huge and vast body of water. Thinking about the bottom of the sea, what is going on there and those beautiful fishes, enjoying their life. Seeing little highland that and mountain that stand in the middle of the ocean feel u with the might of the most High – the only things that has power over all things.
We cross this time along the belt of the equator to brazil, no much weather difference, it was nice , Recife and Salvador , all are beautiful place , ,,,u find beautiful everywhere anyway. You find the other one – it is our choice which path we want to take –but for sure there is no drain in this planet weather in social or environmental context. What in Recife and Brazil (ask me)?
Then we continue the journey downward to Argentina, suddenly the weather change, temperate weather emerge out of tropical weather, a similitude of how the night come out of the day and verse versa – what another sign of the fact that the most high own all the control of everything if not we should control – but rather my friend we have to change our systems, every systems – you can imagine what can happened if fluid get freeze in the pipes—we are finished.
We arrive Rio De La Plata – the biggest estuarine in the world- one of those places where river meet sea and if u investigate it the layer is there,,,the never MIX – another sign of the mightiness’ of the greatest almighty .Rio de la Plata ,,is a very beautiful water ..demanding also because its depth need to be monitored against target vessels…in fact it took the same time to cross the atlantics cross this river- normally restricted water are shallow and pilots that are familiar with the river must assist the vessel to go with tug boat assistance . And passage must be well coordinated with the weather and the wave condition.
We finally reach after long and tiresome sail --- a compulsory and artificial attenuation to slow the boat – we have no choice … human we will face circumstance like this – all what we need is to slow down set a good direction …. And we will be get - whatever our destination is – of course we finally arrived the port in San Lorenzo , it was nice—only that I get frustrated because not many people speak English , this is the reason why learning languages is very important – I like seeing different people …different culture ….different way of life ,,,even ,,,,after critical thinking …at the basic level ..We all behave and do things the same way – because I see how people behave in the lowest level of family relations. We are the one that makes things up. we let psychology and condition ride us….and this is where our weakness lies—we are obliged to maintain the sate of our mind no matter happened –we must balance everything just like an accountant- san loranzo is great u see women using their hand to make beautiful artifact and handcraft –you can find adorable gift there . The nearest big town is Rosario, I did spent one night in Rosario
A look at Rio De La Plata as described by UNESCO under heritage legend :
With the establishment of the Reglamento de Libre Comercio (Free Trade Regulations) of 1778, there was a large increase in the activities of the Río de la Plata ports. Traders from Chile and Peru joined in the Atlantic trade using the trade routes which linked Upper Peru and Santiago to Buenos Aires. Starting in 1785, the Company of the Philippines linked the Río de la Plata and Asia. At that time, contacts with the West African coast were untrammelled and began to extend to the coasts of Mozambique and the islands of the Indian Ocean. The Viceroyalty’s population and labour power increased with the constant arrival of African slaves, especially after 1791, when the Crown liberalized the slave trade.
The trade in negro slaves passed through various stages in Spanish America and, consequently, in the Río de la Plata. The Consejo de Indias (Council of the Indies) assumed responsibility from the beginning in this domain, creating a special board within itself called the Junta de Negros. An initial stage concerned the granting of ‘licences’, usually to Portuguese or French traders given that, although the Spaniards used slave labour, they did not directly participate in the trade itself. The second stage comprised the regulation of the influx of slaves based on the signing of Asiento treaties with the French Guinea Company in 1700 and the South Sea Company, starting from 1713. The third stage started in 1789, when King Carlos IV abolished the Asientos and declared the freedom to trade in salves in his American possessions.. Slaves continued to be brought into the Río de la Plata until 1812, when their import was outlawed by a Decree of the post-independence government. Slavery was later abolished by the 1853 Constitution.
As u can see – we were first link naturally by water- the ocean, and by air, today me and are talking with a boat inform of telecom infrastructure with digital manipulation. We are also with eco system – and we are going more linked whether we like it or not – especially now that the world natural resources has been most depleted and we are seeing abnormalities in weather – things we never see before, are exposing a lot of things we have been over looking …global warming,,, some places that never see snow are seeing a little bit of eat …the sea lever are rising, more arctic ice are melting – how can we solve this we must balance things everywhere. We cannot balance things without knowing one another, without being friend to one another.
Personally from my experience every time I change space to see another place as far as even my friend house in town , I rediscover myself === at anytime u feel that u are too big ,,,u just make a trip ,,,u will see the work of God , you will rediscover who you are –We are made in color, with difference not despise or exploit one another ,,but to admire , respect one another .,,,to love share – above all to have fun – to enjoy life—u tell me if were al the same what life will look like .what will life belike if we are all men or all women – aren’t women creative force of world ?
De French says “ quand il change ca ne change pas” what a truth . About a statement, I respect what human have built – all the houses, the architecture, the ship….but war has set man pack even beyond the stone age – we are not civilized until we stop fighting ourselves….until we are one…..and this where the reality of civilization lies—why don’t we travel and see what God created –and discover that the is actually no difference between human ….most city I have seen just look the same…the suburbs ..you find the same kind of people everywhere
