ADA Signs - Meeting the Needs of Disabled Americans

Signs are provided to enable people to learn information about where they are and how things operate. If you suffer from a hearing or visual disability however, signs can sometimes be of little assistance. As part of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) all architectural signs are required to be ADA compliant. Examples of signs which have to be ADA signs are those that designate a restroom or other permanent room of a facility, those that describe the functional or accessible aspects of a room and those that identify entrances and exits. Street signs, advertising and marketing signs and company signs do not have to be ADA compliant.

ADA signs have several requirements that they must meet in order to be compliant. These requirements are all intended to make the signs usable and beneficial to the individuals that are dependent upon gaining useful information from them. In order for a sign to be considered ADA compliant, it must not be on a reflective background. People that suffer from a visual disability struggle with glary or reflective signs. Signs must also use a high contrast between the background and the lettering that is used. So long as there is a big contrast between the background and the foreground an ADA sign can be almost any color.

Many ADA signs will include some sort of pictogram indicating what the sign is attempting to identify. Some common examples of this would be the standard man and woman figures commonly utilized to identify and differentiate men's and women's restrooms, the wheelchair icon utilized to identify a parking spot or ramp that is wheelchair accessible and the phone with volume marks designating a phone as having volume controls. The pictograms that are featured need to be in a clear 6 inch high field and have to include a tactile character and Braille label in order to be ADA compliant.

In order for ADA signs to be useful to the legally blind, that are counting on being able to utilize the tactile or Braille information there are strict regulations surrounding the placement of these signs. An ADA sign is required to be 60 inches from the finished floor and needs to be accessible to within 3 inches of the reader, allowing them unfettered access to feel the sign. Champion America has a wide selection of ADA compliant signs for parking lots and buildings. Questions & Answers about Room Street Sign

If you saw a homeless person on the street asking for food, Would you help?

I live in a smaller City in Wisconsin. It;s very rare to see anyone homeless. He was on the corner and had a sign that stated" homeless, hungary, anything would help"It was 10 degrees out that day. My husband and I stopped and got him a hotel room and gave him food. The problem is he was out there for 3 hours and we were only the 3rd car to stop. What ever happened to a little compassion

I've stopped and given homeless people food before. I was going to Walmart once and saw one, and when I was inside bought him some food. Another time, I was going to Burger King, so I bought him a meal. It makes you feel good inside, and I know a lot of people don't want to give out money because they think it might be spent on alcohol or drugs. I wish I had the money to provide a hotel room, but I don't right now. I have some old clothes I was gonna give to Goodwill, but I think I will hand them out next time I am downtown.

I want to buy a rat from a pet store?!?

I want to buy a rat from my local pet store down the street , called petsmart im sure theres one near you. Anyways im not telling my mom cause its small and she prob wont ever find out...ill keep it in a hamster ball and then take it out when im in my room...so i was wondering like when i buy one will the petsmart people make me register like signing a bunch of papers? and stuff? also i heard they eat parraket food or whatever my friend had one...so yah.

You can not keep a rat inside a hamster ball. That is cruelty to animals, and it will kill the rat from it's own ammonia (they urinate very often) or from fright! You aren't supposed to keep them in any roller ball for more than 15 minutes at a time anyway. What if it chews it's way out? They have big teeth and chew very fast. How is a rat supposed to eat and drink inside a ball? They can starve to death in two days and dehydrate to death in less than one. They need to eat every few hours and drink every few hours because of their fast metabolism.

You can't keep it in anything smaller than a ferret cage, and you can't own less than two because they become depressed and can die from the stress. Also, any reputable pet shop is not going to sell any animal to a little kid!

How are you going to afford the cage, bedding, litter (for potty making in the litterbox), food, vet bills, water bottle, toys (they need new toys because they destroy them with their teeth), and other supplies for this animal? They shouldn't eat bird food. They need a good staple diet of prepackaged (not loose) lab blocks, fresh greens daily, small amounts of seed diet for protein for young rats, grains... they eat a very varied diet!

A rat is not a "throw-away" pet just because it is small. Did you know they are as trainable and intelligent as a dog? Would you make a dog suffer and die? I certainly hope you're nicer than that!

Please don't try to do this. These animals are emotional and feeling beings that don't deserve to be treated with cruelty. I know you aren't trying to be a bad person, but you don't realize how much this rat will hurt if you don't know how to take care of him or her!

If you go read a current book on rat care (Baron's Rats is a great and easy-to-read book that's available at Petsmart, Petco, and Barnes and Nobles) you will see that they are actually very high-maintenance and can be quite expensive!

Also, if you can't handle the rat and you treat it bad, it may bite you. And bites from rats, mice, hamsters, rabbits, and guinea pigs often are so deep they can hit the BONE! It's not something that you'll be able to ignore because it hurts!

Most of these animals are very good pets for someone with the money and experience, but without proper care believe me they can be a nightmare.
